4K TVs make startling progress

Statue of John Logie Board, Wikimedia CommonsThe market for standard LCD TVs fell in the first quarter of this year by two percent, but there’s one exception to the decline.

IHS, a market research company, said that 4K LCD shipments grew by a staggering 400 percent during the quarter, accounting for shipments of 4.7 million units worldwide.

And demand was very strong in China during its New Year holiday period.

Sales of 4K TVs, said IHS, are benefiting from falling prices, better availability of content, and more selection available.

Of the 4.7 million units shipped worldwide, 2.6 million units shipped in mainland China in the quarter.

Paul Gagnon, a senior analyst at IHS, said: “4K shipments in China account for over half of global demand and set a new high water mark in the world’s largest 4K market. This growth was driven by an expanded assortment of screen sizes between 40 inches and 50 inches hat have recently become available from manufacturers.”

The top vendor worldwide is Samsung, followed by another Korean firm, LG Electronics. Hisense, Sony and and Skyworth followed these two.
