Congressman Rush Holt triumphs over IBM's Watson "Jeopardy" Supercomputer

A New Jersey congressman has apparently triumphed over an IBM supercomputer, which has beaten some of the most successful champions from Jeopardy.

Rush Holt reportedly got one over on the computer, named Watson, in a round of the game in Washington.

IBM Watson, which has been developed over the past four years, has made headlines the past few months for doing extremely well on beating beating contestants of the American game show.

It aims to compete for a $1 million cash prize against two of Jeopardy’s most successful contestants, Ken Jennings, who broke the record for most consecutive wins, and Brad Rutter, the winner of the largest prize at $3,255,102.

It has been built on an IBM POWER7 server, which can give Watson the power that it needs to perform at quick speeds and “think” about the questions it needs to answer.

However it looks like that wasn’t enough to beat Holt, who tweeted: “I played a full round against @IBMWatson tonight and was proud to hold my own: the final tally was Holt $8,600, Watson $6,200.”

However, Mr Holt isn’t your average run of the mill congressman. He’s a nuclear physicist and has also written papers in a number of scientific research journals.
