Larry E axes Project Darkstar

Venture Beat reports that Oracle has axed Sun Microsystems‘ Project Darkstar.

Darkstar is a project 10 years in the making and aimed at code to support virtual worlds.

The chief gaming officer at Sun, Chris Mellisinos, left Oracle yesterday after 16 years. He’d been the leading light promoting the project.

An announcement on the Community web site said a couple of days ago that Sun Labs engineering is no longer being applied to Darkstar development.

However, it is an open source project, and there looks to be a strong possibility that the community can continue to develop. Another member of the community said that it was a shame things ended when the team was “within spitting distance of full multi-node”.

Venture Beat said that Project Wonderland, a tool for creating 3D environments has also gone under the axe.
