Software giant Microsoft appears to think that there is some mileage in appealing to the wearers of tin foil hats.
The marketing boys and girls at Redmond have realised that there are some who do not like giving out their personal data to Google and see this as a potential sale.
Microsoft has formally pledged that unlike Google, it won’t scan the contents of your email in Hotmail in order to deliver ads.
Well were not expecting this anyway but thanks very much.
Speaking at the SaaSCon 2010 conference, Tim O’Brien, Microsoft senior director of platform strategy, promised that Redmond won’t deliver any ads that are based on data that can be traced to a particular user.
He told InfoWorld that this enshrined policy includes all of Microsoft’s cloud services.
Microsoft’s announcement happens just as Google is on the ropes over its privacy policies. In February, Florida woman Eva Hibnick filed a class action suit against Google, claiming that Buzz violates privacy rights and federal law. And this week, New York resident Barry Feldma also filed a suit against Google claiming that Google Buzz violated a variety of federal and state privacy laws.
The move by Microsoft will also assure people who are fond of wearing tin foil hats to prevent the lizard people who run the government from reading people’s minds.
