US shoots down missiles with megawatt laser

The US Missile Defence Agency said that it has successfully used a laser device to shoot down a ballistic missile.

The experiment, using the Airborne Laser Testbed (ALTB) was conducted at a range off the central California coast.

On February 11th, a short range ballistic missile was launched from sea – the ALTB sensors picked up the missile and used what it described as a low energy laser to track it. It aimed another low energy laser to fix its bearings.

The ALTB then fired a megawatt High Energy Laser and destroyed the missile within two seconds of launch.

The Agency claims it’s the first time a liquid fuel boosting missile has been destroyed from an airborne platform.

The Agency repeated the experiment an hour later and destroyed a second ballistic missile.
