Tories want to censor porn

Tory PartyThe UK Tory party is going to force age ratings on porn sites, if it wins the election.

The culture secretary, Sajid Javid, said the party would make sure that under 18s were locked out of adult content.

He is apparently furious that a Childline poll found nearly one in 10 12-13 year olds were worried they were addicted and 18 per cent had seen upsetting images.

It is not clear how censorship will happen as the UK is confident it can UK-based and overseas websites.

Under the Tory proposals the system would be overseen by an independent regulator with the power to compel internet service providers (ISPs) to block sites which failed to include effective age verification.

ISPs could be fined if they did not co-operate.

“As a father to four young children, I worry, like every other parent, how easy it is for them to view explicit material,” Javid said.

This is about giving children the best start in life; we do not want to prevent adults from accessing legal content but we do want to protect our children from harmful material, so they are free to develop a healthy attitude to sex and relationships.”

The move will be backed by those groups such as the made up Parents who Tutt which have been attempting to outsource parental responsibly to the government for ages.

So far UK attempts to block porn have proved as silly as the politicians who have demanded it. ISPs have been ordered to block certain sites and many have done so only to find that the same sites have been accessible through proxy sites and other internet go arounds.

The fact that a 13 year old boy will find porn when and where he puts his mind to it has bemused politicians for centuries and it seems strange that the UK government is so keen to force censorship blocks that it knows will not work.
