Intel chip shortage costs Microsoft

Intel bus - Wikimedia CommonsA report said that a shortage of Intel’s Skylake processors means that Microsoft Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 2-in-1 systems will delay shipments until the first quarter of next year.

The Digitimes wire said orders have been postponed until next year, with Pegatron hoping that yield rates will improve.

Microsoft released its Surface 4 Pro earlier this quarter and analysts had expected sales of the machine to do very well in the most important selling quarter of this year.

The Surface Pro 4 is aimed at Apple products rather than the regular notebook market which continues to be affected by oversupply and other ecpnomic factors.

Digitimes also suggested that Microsoft plans to charge notebook vendors higher licensing fees for Windows 10, which will eat into profits for the makers.
