The Commission announced that it had set its watchdogs onto the chipmaker and had opened two antitrust investigations into Qualcomm’s possible abuse of its market dominance of semiconductors used in consumer electronic devices.
The first investigation will see the watchdog’s snuffling around the hindquarters of Qualcomm’s exclusive baseband deals.
Qualcomm is the market leader for baseband chipsets seems to have offered financial sweeteners to customers on condition that they bought its baseband chipsets exclusively or almost exclusively.
The second will look into whether Qualcomm engaged in ‘predatory pricing’ by charging prices below costs with a view to forcing its competition out of the market.
European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement that ,any customers use electronic devices such as a mobile phone or a tablet and she wants to make sure that they ultimately get value for money.
If that is the EU criteria for an anti-trust investigation, why isn’t it investigating the high-mark ups on Apple products?
