Ofcom lays down rules for spectrum auction

Ofcom logoUK telecomms watchdog Ofcom said it has established groundwork for the award of mobile spectrum including frequencies and how the auction will work.

Anyone can put in a bid for spectrum but Ofcom quite sensibly suggests that the mobile industry contains the most likely contenders.

The 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands will be made available for civil use and support very high data capacity.

The body has asked potential bidders to comment on whether Ofcom should award the spectrum later this year or early next year.

Ofcom will issue licences for the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands for an “indefinite” period but with an initial term of 20 years.

The closing date for the consultation is the 26th of June.
