Gartner tells Sony to buy Sony Ericsson

Beancounters at Gartner have suggested that Sony takes over the Sony Ericsson joint venture.

According to the Big G, the handset joint venture will have major problems trying to recoup market share unless Sony takes control

Sony Ericsson is a joint venture which has been running for ten years now. But it needs more cash so that it can capture a slice of Google’s Android platform.

Big G thinks that of Sony took the outfit over it could boost Sony which is yet to come out with a smartphone.

Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi said that Sony has not seemed interested in making the move but if it looks at what Apple did, it could do something very similar.

Sony Ericsson’s did well when the the pair were breaking new ground with Walkman music phones and Cybershot cameraphones. It did not do so well at the cheap and cheerful end and its market share fell.

Sony Ericsson is pushing into smartphones and is doing quiet well, but to get more people interested, the outfit needs Sony’s popular content, Milanesi argued.

At the moment it makes more sense for Sony to roll Sony Ericsson under its own banner rather than compete with it, which it is doing now.
