291.2 million smartphones shipped in first quarter

Galaxy 6Although close to 300 million smartphones shipped in the first quarter of 2015, that’s a drop of 9.2 percent compared to the previous quarter.

And the decline is due to lack of demand in mainland China. That’s according to a report from market research company TrendForce.

Its analysts estimate that the internal market will reduce inventory as we approach Chinese May Day sales.

Samsung and Apple stayed at number one and two respectively. Apple will ship over 80 million units in the second quarter. Samsung will ship around 45 million units with Trendforce estimating that second quarter shipments will amount to around 311 million units, a sequential quarterly growth of 6.8 percent.

The analysts believe that the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge have captivated people in the first quart – around 20 million units will ship in the second quarter.

Apple was the number one brand in China in the first quarter.

Amongst Chinese smartphone brands, Huawei sold the most, followed by Lenovo.
