UK coppers back down on website name

Inspector Knacker of the Yard has backed down over his use of the name MyPolice.org.uk.

Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) had unveiled plans for a project called MyPolice.org.uk which was intended to be used by members of the public to find out information about how their local force is performing.

However the problem was that the name was already being used by a project called MyPolice.org which started in 2009, intended to allow people to report on the success of their local coppers.

HMIC said it had “nothing to gain by overwhelming MyPolice.org”.

Earlier this week the entrepreneurs behind the independent site had accused HMIC of trampling over their work. Co-founder Lauren Currie told the BBC  that it had caused “a huge problem”.

“We think the product HMIC launched, which until today shared our name as My Police, is a genuinely good idea”, she said.
