O2 dummies tech press before broadband package launch

Late last week the tech mags were picking up on a story that said the UK is paying far too much for broadband it doesn’t need and that users in the UK have been wasting millions picking packages that are faster than the demand requires.

O2 used a ThinkBroadband speed checker to note that most people use broadband for low broadband activities like browsing the web and social notworking. The majority weren’t downloading 20 Terabyte torrents of all of last month’s TV, they were paying bills and checking emails instead.

The message was clear: why are you mugs paying for high speeds when the most the majority do that needs fast internet is going onto iPlayer to stream Eastenders? Pick a cheaper plan!

Here are some publications that ran with the story: Financial website of the year, the Daily Mail’s This Is Money, T3, Trusted Reviews and Computing.

Lo’ and behold! The clever press team behind O2 were attempting to generate awareness for paying over the odds. It was a nice little story that could have either picked up or not – it did okay.

The idea had been given authority by appearing in the rags and left forgotten over the weekend.
Today, coincidentally, O2 has released its latest broadband packages including a basics range.

They sound more like pizzas than copper wiring. They’re called: The Basics, The All Rounder, The Works and Access. It’s also introducing a 30-day rolling contract so it can be used as needed.

Instead of calling packages ‘unlimited’ usage is now called “As Much As You Like,” sticking to the pizza buffet theme and avoiding upsetting the ASA. Here are the details in full, from ISP Review:
