Neo-nazis hack Buchenwald memorial site

The website of the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation was hijacked and defaced by right-wing extremists on Wednesday.

Visitors to the site www.buchenwald.de were redirected to a website denying the holocaust, the site www.dora.de was deleted. According to the foundation, the attackers left messages such as “brown as beautiful” and “Wir kommen wieder” (we’ll be back). The online version of the funerary book of the Buchenwald concentration camp was also taken down.

According to reports, right-wing extremists in the federal Free State of Thuringia do not have the technical capability to take down a website, meaning it must have been defaced by neonazi activists from somewhere else in Germany. The heinous act was apparently perpetrated by a certain group of hackers, which is being held responsible for similar acts in other federal states.

Volkhard Knigge, a professor and the chairman of the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation stated the police have begone investigating the attack. Knigge commented the attackers were trying to keep the dead, who left their lives in Buchenwald, from being remembered.

He also added the foundation was able to analyse the attack and could assess what the attackers were not capable of doing, in order to prevent similar defacements in the future.
