A platoon of Israeli soldiers is in hot water after a YouTube video showing them dancing in the street of Hebron went viral.
Under normal circumstances the video would be quite amusing. The heavily armed platoon patrols normally before breaking into a choreographed dance to the tune Kesha’s “Tik Tok.”
Unfortunately the song, the time and the place make the video so politically incorrect and insensitive it makes Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu look like a peace loving hippy by comparison.
The lyrics to the song include the phrase “Tonight I’m gonna fight, Till we see the sunlight, Tick tock on the clock but the party don’t stop, no.”
Then there is the small matter that the video is of a patrol of Hebron, a city where 600 hardline Israeli settlers live in the middle of 160,000 Palestinians. The street in question is where the apartheid laws of Israel forbid Palestinians from entering and when the video starts with the mausoleum call to prayer can be heard in the background.
To be fair, it looks to us like a platoon of bored soldiers mucking around but the indifference to the political situation seems to have sailed up the nasal passages of everyone.
As one person commented “It’s easy to laugh at the occupation when you’re the oppressor.”
The video was pulled by the solder who put it up, but of course, it has been copied and the Israeli High Command is not amused.
“This was a joke by the soldiers and the matter is currently being investigated by the battalion commanders,” a terse statement said, with media reports saying those involved were likely to be punished for “inappropriate conduct during a military operation.”
Frankly we would rather see the dancing and having a laugh rather than dropping white phosphorus on schools, but that is just us.
