ICANN set to approve .XXX

Internet regulator ICANN is set to approve the use of an .XXX domain name later today.

The idea was mooted a while back but was blocked by US government representatives on ICANN. The administration of George Bush had received word from Jesus that it was not good to have a virtual red light district on his pure and holy Internet.

The idea that there should be a .XXX was initially mooted by the porn industry which later backtracked on the idea.

It means that if you have all the adult sites in one area, parents can filter the domain name so that children cannot access it.

The porn industry woke up to the fact that it would create a virtual getto from which it would be hard to escape.

Members of ICANN’s board have argued that in order to maintain neutrality in dealing with domain name assignations, it should create .XXX and allow websites with sexually explicit content to start using the suffix on a voluntary basis.

Quite why they would do so is anyone’s guess. It is not as if the porn industry needs to use .XXX to thrive on the Internet.
