After the French backed coup which kicked out the US’s lawful government, the nation has been run by a junta of commercial interests. Thus an alliance of the big names of tech could make some serious difference to the political landscape.
Google has seen that it really needs chums in Washington, otherwise it will be walked over by the lobby groups of the telcos and Big Content and has jacked up its lobbying spending by more than 90 percent since last year.
According to a statement, Amagoobook will be officially known as the Internet Association. It will start banging on doors in Washington and applying grease on palms from September.
Michael Beckerman has been named as the association’s president. He knows his way around Washington without having to look at his Android GPS. Beckerman is a former adviser to the chairman of the US House of Representatives’ Energy and Commerce Committee.
He said that the aim of the group is to educate legislators about the impact of the internet in their congressional districts.
Good luck with that – many of them will not touch a computer and think that the interwebs are a collection of tubes run by communist badgers operating out of Cuba. Although, to be fair, some US senators can actually write their own names without the help of a lobbyist.
Facebook boosted its spending on federal lobbying by 200 per cent in the second quarter, spending $960,000 on helping Washington understand things like online privacy and immigration reform.
EBay spent $400,600 on lobbying in the second quarter, up about 10 percent from the same quarter in 2011. Its was focused on piracy and counterfeiting, air pollution and revenue repatriation.
Amazon spent $690,000 in the second quarter, up about 25 per cent from the second quarter of 2011. It was concerned about sales tax, privacy and advertising.
