Google adds Facebook-esque status updates to its Chat function

Google has announced an update to its Gmail messaging services, days after Facebook announced an update to its chat function.

But Google’s new chat also allows users to post detailed social status updates, according to the Wall Street Journal, making the system a bit like Twitter as well.

The changes to Gmail chat will allow Google users at manage all their internet communications, including alerts and chat sessions in one place. This could be up as soon as next week.

The new Google function will resemble the Facebook and Twitter real-time feeds and will contain status updates from contacts.

Facebook upgraded its messaging service on February 5th while also unveiling a new look to users’ homepages. Currently Facebook chat is still not connected to other e-mail systems and can only be used from the Facebook homepage, which is expected to change in the upgrade.
