Fine for file sharing woman slashed by judge

A woman fined $2,000,000 by a court last year had the fine cut to $54,000 by a district judge.

Courts can award between $750 and $30,000 for every song that’s illegally downloaded.

Judge Michael Davis said that the $2 million fine for stealing and distributing 24 songs could not be justified. The judge told the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) that it had seven to days to ask for a fresh hearing or to accept the reduced fine.

Jammie Thomas-Rasset still thinks the $54,000 is way too much and her lawyers are considering applying for a further reduction in the fine.

Thomas-Rasset has four children and one job and said she can’t afford to pay $54,000, never mind $2 million.
