Comic proves pricing point

A comic has proven Big Content completely barking, by making a killing by releasing a CD with no DRM but at a cheap price.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Louis CK wanted to prove the point that people will pay a reasonable amount of money for DRM-free content from a performer they love, even though it would be trivial for them to pirate the same content for free.

Louis CK skipped the distribution, DRM, ads and everything else that goes into marketing and sale of a video, and simply offered the video of his latest performance on his website for $5.

Eight days later he was taking  $1 million to the bank and he published a screenshot of his Paypal account to prove it.

His experiment was to release a standup special at $5 and make it as easy as possible to buy, download and enjoy, free of any restrictions, will everyone just go and steal it?

He is not the first to try this, it has been done by Radiohead and others in the past. In fact it was “too successful” and Louis said he is only keeping $220,000 for himself.

He promoted the album himself through various social media channels, including Twitter and Reddit.

Of course it does depend on you being a name in the first place. A normal bloke who has recorded a single in his basement on his dad’s old eight-track is not going to attract much attention whatever happens.
