Astronauts on the International Space Station have started communicating to the world from space – using Twitter and with access to the Web and internet.
The space station uses the Crew Support LAN, using communication links already in place and will presumably let them use Skype to talk to their loved ones, although it seems there are “limited” videoconferencing facilities.
They’re already using Twitter. As we wrote earlier this week, T.J. Creamer posted an update from his @Astro_TJ account from the space station.
His message? “Hello Twitterverse! We are now LIVE tweeting from the International Space Station – the 1st live tweet from Space! 🙂 More soon, send your ?s”
The LAN works when the station communicates with ground control using Ku-band communications. The crew can look at the desktop of the ground computer using an onboard laptop.
