Vendors tap fingers waiting for Intel to kill Celeron brand

Rumour is that Intel is contemplating finally killing off its Celeron brand – a brand that’s served it well over the years.

According to Taiwanese wire Digitimes, both Asustek and Acer are “digesting” their stocks of netbooks because Intel is launching the dual core Atom N550 in the third quarter.

According to the wire, there will be a price different of between $11 and $22 for the new Atom lamp and the Atom N455 and N475.

It reckons that when the Atom N550 appears, it will cause a conflict between Celeron notebooks and netbooks using the little Atom CPU.

All the notebook vendors are sort of sitting on the side waiting for Intel to make up its mind about the decking of the Celeron. Digitimes is here.

* The same wire reports that the chairman of Asustek, Jonney Shih, has sent a letter out to company employees to stiffen their morale in the shape of industry rumours that Jerry Shen, the CEO was contemplating resigning. Shen is not resigning, said Shih.
