Sharp reveals new 3D camera module

Sharp Corporation has today announced the development of a 3D camera module for mobile devices.

The new module is capable of capturing 720p high-definition 3D video images and Sharp is keen to emphasise that this is an industry first.

The new 3D camera module features two cameras for taking the two different streams of data needed to develop 3D images for the left and right eyes. It includes Color Synchronising Processing to adjust color and brightness, Timing Synchronising Processing to synchronise the timing of the video signals, and Optical Axis Control Processing to correct positioning. Fast Readout Technology is also in place to rapidly transfer video data from the image sensor, enabling 3D images to be captured in HD.

The new module has been made ultra compact by applying high-density mounting technology. This will allow its use in digital camera, mobile phones, and smartphones, along with any other technology where a 3D camera is needed.

Sharp is going big-time into 3D, hoping to open up new 3D markets based on 3D display technologies, including small, medium, and large size 3D LCDs, such as a 3D screen that requires no glasses.

Sharp will start shipping samples of the new 3D camera module in July, while mass production will begin by the end of the year.
