Samsung confesses: we are doing badly in tablets

A Samsung executive has probably caused his PR minder to choke on her latte after confessing to the press that the company was not doing very well in the tablet market.

Normally, executives attending shows have to be so up beat that the PRs have to nail their feet to the floor to stop them floating way. But Hankil Yoon, a product strategy executive for Samsung, surprised hacks by telling Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that “we’re not doing very well in the tablet market.”

That does not mean that anyone is giving up in the battle against Apple. In fact, it’s possible he only said it because he was certain that Samsung would be giving Cupertino a kick in the groin sometime soon.

What is surprising is that the comment came from Samsung, which is starting to make inroads into Apple’s market despite all the legal attacks against it.

Kevin Packingham, senior vice president of product innovation for Samsung Mobile told PC Mag  that Samsung has been feeling its way in the tablet market with the launch of so many devices.

Last year, it was trying to work out what to do on the tablet side and now it is beginning to understand the market.

Packingham said that Samsung is optimising the tablet portfolio to go after the segments where the company can be successful. He thinks that Samsung will turn things around and the fact that Apple keeps suing it is a sign the company really is worried.
