LG’s chief executive Han Sang-beom told Reuters that mass production had just started and there did not appear to be any problems.
The screens are four inches which will be smaller than the Samsung Galaxy which has a 4.8-inch touch-screen but much bigger than the current iPhones.
The screens are a lot thinner than previous versions and use an in-cell panel which embeds touch sensors into the liquid crystal display. This means that there does not need to be a touch-screen layer.
The widescreen panel is based on Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching technology and has a 440 pixels per inch screen. Apple’s Retina display has 264 ppi on the new iPad and 326 ppi on the iPhone 4S.
We reported that the the Screen was coming in June but we did not link the release to the iPhone. This is because Sharp has already announced that it would start shipping screens destined for a new iPhone earlier this month.
Apple is expected to announce its new iPhone 5 on September 12 so we will know then.
