LCD shipments show strong recovery

The market for large area TFT LCD panels showed strong growth in 2009, bucking the recession.

Displaysearch said shipments showed a record high of 527 million units – with mini-notes, TVs and public display units all strong. The fourth quarter was the strongest, with 154 million units shipped.

While monitors is now a relatively mature market, showing only two percent year on year growth notebook PC and mininote panels hit 175 million units, while TV panels grew 45 percent year on year, with 163 million units shipped.

Strong demand from mainland China for LCD TVs accounted for much of that growth.

LG Display had a 24.9 percent market share, followed closely by Samsung at 24.5 percent. AU Optronics and Chi Mei held 17 percent and 14.2 percent.
