One of the world’s top animators, Hayao Miyazaki, really hates the iPad in a way which makes me look like a rank amateur.
Miyazaki has stated that he rarely watches TV, does not own a computer or a fax and doesn’t even own a DVD player. Instead of e-mail, he writes letters. He also makes wonderful films and really, really hates the iPad – did I mention that?
In an interview in “Neppuu“, which is a Studio Ghibli published pamphlet, the famed animator does not mince his words when it comes to chatting about the iPad.
He calls it a “game machine-type thing” that people are “stroking with strange gestures”.Miyazaki said that he has no feelings of admiration or no excitement whatsoever about the iPad. “It’s disgusting. On trains, the number of those people doing that strange masturbation-like gesture is multiplying.”
This is nothing new. Miyazaki admitted that he got “fed up” when everyone on the trains started reading manga and then later when everyone began using mobiles on the trains.
However Miyazaki is going to have a huge philosophical problem with Apple fan boys, over and above the fact that they look like they are pleasuring a coffee tray.
He wants people to become creators, and not simply consumers, whereas the Apple dream is to consume gadgets as fast as Steve Jobs can design them. Miyazaki is about really thinking differently and not talking about it. It is not the first time that people have made the link between onanism and fanboys but when it comes to abusing fan boys we have to bow to the master.
