Those with a spare $999 have been buying the chip to see how fast they can make it go .
According to what is written on the box, the chip can manage 3.33 Ghz. However the overclockers at Genesis desktop, are flogging a machine that has an overclocked Core i7-980x to 4.3 GHz.
This is an official badged product so there is no question that the six core monster can go a lot faster. Some overclocking sites seem to think that if you turn the machine on, by the time you will turn it off, your seven year old will be a grandfather.
The good part about all this is that Intel actually allows you to over clock it. The 980X is an Extreme Edition so it has over clocking covered in the warranty.
Still, there is that $999 price tag, but oddly the higher priced computer market has not really suffered from the recession. After all Apple managed to flog its over priced toys throughout the downturn.
