Taiwan motherboard maker Biostar Microtech has announced the TA890FXE motherboard which sports a utility it calls BIO-unlocKING, which can quickly turn a quad-core CPU into a fully functionaly six-core.
The TA890FXE ships with the AMD Phenom II X6 processor with the 890FX chipset, which is able to switch between running two or three coress at a time depending on what prcesses you’re running. It can run up to four ATI Radeon HD graphics cards and supports the ATI EyeFinity multi-display technology.
It has native support for SATA 6.0 Gb/s, Gigabit Ethernet, HyperTransport 3.0 and PCI Express 2.0. It is powered by a 6 phase PWM, supporting 140W processors, four PCI0Express 2.0 x 16 slots which support ATI CrossFireX, 7.1 channel HD Blu-Ray audio and FireWire.
Biostar’s pride and joy is its Bio-unlocKING technology. It claims that while the technology can make easy work of unlocking a 2 core processor into 4 cores, its latest effort can turn a 4 core into a 6 core. The shipped BIOS automatically detects the amount of hidden cores during installation.
Here Biostar talks the user through how simple it is to unlock an AMD Phenom II X4 960T processor into 6 cores on the TA880G HD motherboard, showing off how pressing the f6 button makes the motherboard do the work for you. F7 overclocks the motherboard via the GameBoost feature, speeding the graphics frequency up from 560MHz to 700MHz.
