In a statement the company said: “Despite recent rumours in the press regarding the launch of Chrome OS based netbooks at Computex, Acer today confirms that it has no short-term plans for such a product.”
The announcement comes as the rumour mill went into overdrive yesterday with many sources and websites, including ourselves, reporting that Acer devices with Chrome OS would launch at the tradeshow, which takes place between June 1 and June 5.
This was much sooner than many anticipated, with original predictions suggesting that Chrome OS wouldn’t see its debut on netbooks until late 2010.
However, it seems the grapevine got slightly too over excited and we may in fact have to wait until the estimated time frame to see netbooks with this Open Source browser hit the market.
And it doesn’t seem Acer is giving away anything about when it will actually be launching these devices. It continued in its statement: “Acer believes that Google Chrome OS is without doubt an exciting product announcement and deserves its full attention as well as an in-depth study of its potential from a consumers perspective.
“Acer is naturally interested in any product or service that enhances the overall experience of its products and will of course be following the development and progress of Google Chrome and the evolution of Google’s overall product strategy very closely.”
Very non-committal indeed
