Acer debuts Ion 2 netbooks

At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Monday, Acer showed off what is effectively the world’s first netbook powered by Nvidia’s next-generation ION GPU.

There have long been rumours that a bevvy of beefed up little lappies boasting Nvidia’s Ion 2 and new Optimus switchable graphics would tip up sometime in Spring, but many thought this wouldn’t happen until CeBit in early March.

Acer’s new offerings boast 10.1” screens, a HD LED backlit display, integrated Wi-Fi and optional 3G connectivity, all in a compact little package an inch thin and weighing about a kilo.

Although Acer is previewing the new netbooks at MWC, sources tell us the actual launch of Next-generation ION won’t be until March 2 at CeBIT

Still, Acer will be showing the little machines off at its booth, so pictures will follow shortly.

Availability is expected later in Q1.
