Travel cards let you buy pizzas, doughnuts

The travel cards used in Taipei City now let you buy a heap of stuff from shops all over Taiwan.

Easycards, electronic cards used to travel on the MRT metro system can now be used in lots of shops too including Pizza Hut, Starbucks, 7-Elevens and Wellcome supermarkets.

The Easycard, manufactured by the Hau Corporation uses similar technology as the SIMs built into some HTC smartphones and even some wristwatches.

According to the Taiwan News, there are over eight million Easycards out there. There’s a limit to the value of stuff you can buy – the card’s limit is $NT10,000 (~$313), with transactions in shops limited to $NT3,000 a day.
