TFT-LCD glass grows to 278 million square metres

Glass substrate for use in TFT-LCD production is set to grow 15 percent to amount to 278 million square metres in 2010.

That’s according to a report from market research company Displaysearch, which said that the industry has reverted to the seasonal pattern disrupted by the credit crunch.

There’s been a shortage of supply of glass substrates since the second quarter of 2009, and that means there’s unlikely to be any price reductions in the near future. That’s good news for the manufacturers.

For area, Samsung Corning Precision (SCP) led with a 33 percent market share in the fourth quarter of 2009, followed by AGC with 25 percent, Corning with 19 percent, and NEG with 18 percent.

The reason for SCP leading is, said Displaysearch, because of the strength of Korean TFT LCD manufacturers in the market place.
