Taiwan sees panel demand rise

Taiwanese maker of TFT-LCD panels AU Optronics states revenues in May summed up to NT$43,792 million (1.3 billion USD), 57.9 percent more than in the same month last year. Compared to April, sales grew by 6.4 percent. So far, AU Optronics has sold panels worth NT$196,510 million (5.992 billion USD) this year, a substantial improvement of 91.1 percent.

Demand for large-sized panels, or panels larger than 10 inches, hit an all-time high – shipments rose to over 10.23 million units. However, sales of small- and medium-sized panels decreased by 12.2 percent month-over-month, to 18.54 million panels.

AU Optronics sales are in line with its competitors. According to the Taiwanese IEK-ITIS (Industry & Technology Intelligence Services), the island republic’s entire flat panel display industry had total sales worth 11.97 billion US Dollars, 67.5 percent more than one year ago. Sales of parts and components for panels summed up to 3.77 billion US Dollars, an increase of 68.4 percent year-over-year, yet a decrease of 5.3 percent compared to the final quarter of 2009.

Panels worth a total of 8.2 billion dollars were produced, 67.1 percent more than in the same period last year. However, sales did decline 5.5 percent quarter-over-quarter.

Sales of large-sized panels, or panels larger than 10 inches, grew by 85.1 percent year-over-year and contributed 6.9 billion US Dollars to total industry revenues, whereas increasing demand led to growth of 20.3 percent for small- and medium-sized displays, which accounted for $1.06 billion in sales. IEK-ITIS reckons total production value is set to grow by 3.23 percent in the second quarter, to around 12.35 billion.
