Network Solutions’ billing called into question

American technology company Network Solutions has started hitting up its customers for fees for a security product they did not ask for, it is alleged by this site.

The domain name registration business manages more than a million domain names and has been sending their customers a bill for security services and they are not cheap.

According to a mister called  Brent Simmons he got an email from that told him he had been enrolled in its WebLock Program.

Apparently, to recapture the costs of maintaining this extra level of security for his account, his credit card will be billed $1,850 for the first year of service on the date his program goes live. After that he would be billed $1,350 on every subsequent year from that date. He was told that if he wished to opt out of this programme he could  do so by calling NS at 1-888-642-0265.

Simmons thought this was spam email as he could not believe that he’d been opted-in, without his permission, to any new product particularly one which was so pricey.

He checked on Twitter to see if this was phishing and was stunned to discover it was real.

Simmons has been a customer of Network Solutions since 1997 and said that while their website was always kind of a pain, he had never had problems with them. However, thanks to this extreme behaviour he said he is taking all his web accounts elsewhere.

And what exactly is Weblock? Does it launch drones to attack hackers while they are doing over your site? No not exactly, it sets up a nine digit PIN number which has to be inputted before a hacker can take control of your domain name. Every time a change is made on your site, someone from Network Solutions will give you a ring and ask you for your PIN number.

In addition WebLock enrolled customers will have access to a 24/7 NOC and rapid response team in the event of any security problems.

So basically a fairly rubbish service from the people who don’t need to provide it, for customers who don’t want it at a price that appears to be so prohibitive that only idiots would buy it. And if you do not phone them up and tell them you don’t want it they will assume you do.

Network Solutions has not responded so far.
