Motorola sued by Microsoft over Google Android

Software giant Microsoft – an also-ran in the smartphone field, has taken legal action against Motorola, alleging it has breached nine patents it owns.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the law suit demands money and an injunction against Motorola, and that Microsoft has also complained about Motorola products to the US International Trade Commission.

Motorola doesn’t use Windows software on any of its mobile phones – it has bet its future on Google’s Android. Microsoft is preparing to launch Windows Phone 7 on Monday.

The law suit comes as Microsoft finds itself very much at the back of a race which is being clearly won by Apple and by Google’s Android. It has spent tens of millions of dollars attempting to dominate the market but with very little to show for it in terms of market share.
