Microsoft sorts out its equal pay karma

15-days-yoga-meditation-and-trekking-retreat-in-the-indian-himalayasAfter its CEO made  a PR blunder by telling a women’s conference that they should expect good karma for working for less than men, Microsoft appears to have been sorting out its policy on equal pay.

Microsoft is offering a new update on its efforts to provide equal pay for equal work for all its employees. The new data comes a day before April 12, which has been designated as National Equal Pay Day.

Writing in her Volish blog, Microsoft’s Executive Vice-President for Human Resources Kathleen Hogan, , stated that the company’s CEO Satya Nadella pledged in October 2014 to make more of an effort to improve its workplace, including equal pay for equal work. At the time, women at Microsoft earned $0.997 for every dollar earn by their male counterparts for equal work. Hogan said:

Today, for every $1 earned by men, our female employees in the US earn 99.8 cents at the same job title and level. Racial and ethnic minorities in the US combined earn $1.004 for every $1 earned by their Caucasian counterparts.

African American/black employees are at $1.003; Hispanic/Latino(a) employees are at 99.9 cents; and Asian employees are at $1.006 for every $1 earned by Caucasian employees at the same job title and level, respectively.

Hogan wrote she was “encouraged” by these numbers and said Microsoft will continue to monitor this data and provide annual updates. She added: “Our announcement today is another step forward along the path of greater diversity and inclusion progress at Microsoft, and in society as a whole. Along with our industry peers, the mission of landing intentional, enduring and impactful diversity and inclusion initiatives is one will we continue to pursue vigilantly.”
