After all these years the missus of Sir William Gates III, Melinda, still will not allow an Apple into the house.
She might have made a name for saving the developing world from disease carrying bugs but she is not stepping back from the old war with Jobs’ Mob.
For the last few years Apple has always claimed that its number one enemy was Microsoft, even though it made few products which actually competed against the Imperium. In fact the war between Apple and Microsoft ended in the 1980s with Apple giving up and going into making toys for very rich Americans.
According to Apple fanzine the New York Times, Melinda is still fighting that war too and Jobs’ Mob’s toys are are not allowed inside the homes or lives of Microsoft’s founding family.
In an interview with the Times’ Deborah Solomon, Gates was asked whether she owns one of Apple’s iPods. Her response was as short as it was telling: “No, I have a Zune.” This is nice because there are only a couple of people in the world who can say that.
Solomon was not going to let that one slide. After all these are rich American kids – they must want an iPod. She said that her kids have asked her and she gave them a Zune and that there are very few things that are on the banned list in her household. But iPods and iPhones are “two things we don’t get for our kids”.
Solomon had another angle to try and convert Gates to the true and visible Apple way. She asked Melinda Gates: “Isn’t there room in this world for both Apple and Microsoft?”
“Microsoft certainly makes products for the Macintosh,” Gates responded.
It is fairly clear that Gates knows which side her fundraising bread is buttered. If Microsoft goes tits up, Bill’s fortune disappears and then there is no money left for her to save the needy.
