Google wants to sell talking shoes

Search engine Google wants developers to come up with a proof of concept for a set of talking shoes, sort of.

The search engine  has released a video of what it has in mind and implies it wants developers to get to work. The video went viral with some of the Italian press announcing that Google had invented a set of talking shoes. Still it makes a change from having to report that there is no government and no pope so there is little else to write about.

What it really was an advertising experiment. Google teamed up with Art, Copy & Code to create “a series of experiments to re-imagine advertising.” This week they decided to make a set of talking shoes.

This is where reality gets a bit tricky to handle. If you look at a lot of the copy penned over the weekend it is easy to make the mistake and believe that the shoes have been made.

“These sneakers that are Adidas high-tops work with an accelerometer, gyroscope, Bluetooth, and have speakers built inside both tongues of the shoes, for example.

Google wrote that by connecting a pair of sneakers to the web, it was creating unique opportunities between physical objects and digital ad spaces.

“Every move the user makes generates data that’s captured using an accelerometer, gyroscope and pressure sensors. That data then gets pushed to a web app on your mobile phone and translated in real-time into funny and motivating commentary. That commentary then gets pushed to banners and social media, creating new, interesting content in the digital world from something happening live in the physical one,” Google wrote.

While it is interesting, the thought of your feet talking to Google and serving up advertising is little scary. We suspect we will soon be in a world where our Google Glasses tell us that we have no chance of scoring unless we change our socks, and recommending the nearest place to buy a pair.  Still that is the price of staying instep with fashion and dipping your toes into wearable computers.
