EMC’s Pat Gelsinger sings the Intel cloud computing blues

No-one really knows what cloud computing is and every company has its different notion, but the Open Data Center Alliance has as its advisor National Health Service consultancy firm Intel.

So who better to introduce on its cloud webcast this afternoon than Kicking Pat Gelsinger, a man so loyal to Intel during his career that he went to work for storage company EMC.

So what is the Open Data Center Alliance?  It is, it’s said, a consortium of “leading global IT managers” and has as its mission defining requirements for next generation data centres and cloud infrastructure.  Good luck to them on that!

Multinationals involved in this alliance include China Life, Lockheed Martin, National Australia Bank, Shell, UBS and the Marriott – not part of the Intel Hotels of Distinction chain.

And guess what? The steering committee has chosen Intel to serve as the technical advisor for the org. Every computer vendor in the world is rubbing its hands thinking of the moolah to come.

Goodness knows what’s going on here. We believe like so many alliances, it will be riven by dissensions and self interest.  But we could be wrong, and it could turn out to be like the League of Nations.
