Court turns down Microsoft fresh hearing on Word

A US court has denied Microsoft permission for a fresh court hearing after it was ruled last year that the Redmond firm had breached a Canadian company’s patents.

Canadian firm i4i was awarded not far short of $300 million last year after a court ruled that Word had breached one of i4i’s patents.

But Microsoft is unswayed by yesterday’s verdict and is likely to seek further ways to challenge the verdict through the legal system.

An appeals court confirmed the i4i ruling in March and re-affirmed the original court’s judgement that Microsoft is prohibited from selling versions of Word 2003 and Word 2007 that breach the patent.
