3D porn film breaks box office records in Hong Kong

The world’s first big budget 3D porn film “Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy” has beat off Avatar as the biggest grossing first day movie, in Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong, Director James Cameron’s 3D film Avatar has been on top ever since its release in 2009, but it seems that there is a newcomer. On the back of criticism that the 3D industry is dying, the flick sticks one in the eye of those who think 2D is the only way to make money.

3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy is well filmed, is as camp as a row of tents and looks tongue in cheek to us. We can just imagine the audience ducking as a musket ball comes flying out into the audience, although we would have expected that sort of thing.

It seems to have brought in more cash on its first day than any other film to open in Hong Kong. It made about $340,000 which was a couple of grand proud of Avatar’s more flaccid effort.

Apparently ticket sales carried on to do a roaring trade throughout the weekend which is not bad for a remake of something which was first tried in 1991.

Sex and Zen is based on an ancient novel entitled The Carnal Prayer and is about a “frustrated” teacher in ancient China who gets drawn into the world of his mate’s harem, as you do.

It stars Japanese porn actresses Hara Saori and Suo Yukiko, and Hong Kong actress Vonnie Liu. Billed in “the world’s first 3-D erotic film,” Sex and Zen features full nudity and “camouflaged lovemaking” which is what you do when you have to dodge 3D bullets we guess.

The flick did well in Taiwan too, but apparently the Taiwanese still prefer their women blue and several metres taller – as it did not do as well as Avatar.

The film’s producer, Stephen Shiu, said that the idea that porn is perfect for 3D films payed off in the initial success of Sex and Zen.

People have always thought that you need 3D technology for this kind of content. So people were very curious, he told the media.
